Important Information to Know Before Applying

  • Deadline to apply is April 15, 2024 unless otherwise stated.
  • Applicant must reside in or have a UNICO Chapter/District sponsor from one of the following states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, or Wisconsin. Exception: The Maria and Paolo Alessio Southern Italy Scholarship is open to applicants from all 50 states.
  • These scholarships are for applicants that will continue studies within the academic year 2024-2025.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Each scholarship offering has a stand-alone application and specific requirements. You can apply to more than one if you meet eligibility.
  • Online degree programs are not eligible for UNICO scholarships.
  • Applicants do not need to be members of UNICO to apply. However, UNICANS and their family members may be sponsored through their respective Chapters.
  • Only recipients are notified after the judging process is completed in late June 2024.
  • Recipients may not apply for any other UNICO Foundation Scholarships while their award is still active.
  • A candidate MUST initiate only one application for each appropriate scholarship. Duplicate entries will be excluded from consideration. An application may be edited, as often as necessary, prior to submission.

Dr. Hugh Mahoney Scholarship Program

The Dr. Hugh Mahoney Scholarship, sponsored by the Middlesex North District Medical Society, is available to any medical school student who is enrolled and has completed one year at an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be a legal resident of one of the following towns comprising the district: Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Groton, Lowell, Pepperell, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro and Westford.

Essex South District Medical Society

ESDMS Medical Student Scholarship Program

Philosophy:
To assist in funding the medical education of a student from an Essex South city or town.

Qualifications:

  1. Residency in an Essex South community for at least 5 years prior to college, with a desire to return and practice in this area. These communities are:  Beverly, Danvers, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Ipswich, Lynn, Lynnfield, Manchester, Marblehead, Middleton, Nahant, Peabody, Rockport, Salem, Saugus, Swampscott, Topsfield and Wenham, Massachusetts.
  2. Current curriculum vitae, which includes the permanent address, high school with date of graduation, and medical school with expected date of graduation.
  3. A statement of academic standing from the medical school.
  4. A letter of recommendation from a district society member, if possible.
  5. A letter that includes a statement of personal goals.

Scholarships will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Essex South District Medical Society (usually in April).

Christine Balch Memorial Scholarship

Application Requirements:

Most scholarships are for students living in Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties in Massachusetts, but some are also available to students living in Berkshire County and Hartford County in Connecticut.

Ralphine McGill-Coons Memorial Scholarship

Boston Mensa awards the $500 Ralphine McGill-Coons Memorial Scholarship to the local student in science or medicine who submits the best essay to our competition.

To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen and live or attend school in the Boston Mensa area (Massachusetts zip codes 01420 through 02675). You also must be enrolled in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student for the following academic year. You do not need to be a member of Mensa, or be related to one.

The International Scholarship Program is open to international Mensans (other than American Mensa). One scholarship, which also includes dependents of international Mensa members, is for those attending college in the United States. The other scholarships are for international Mensans attending college other than in the U.S.

Charles River District Medical Society

CRDMS Scholarship Program Criteria

Deadline: December 31st

The Charles River District Medical Society Program is available to any medical school student enrolled at an approved US institution who is a legal resident of one of the five towns comprising the district: Needham, Newton, Waltham, Wellesley, and Weston. Applications must be received before December 31 of the sophomore or junior year. If the scholarship is awarded in the sophomore year it may be renewable for the junior year upon re-application and at the discretion of the Committee on Medical Education. The scholarship is awarded at the Charles River District Annual Meeting in April.

Requirements:

  1. A Curriculum vitae which must include: legal address, high school and date of graduation; medical school and expected date of graduation.
  2. A letter which includes a statement of personal goal.
  3. A copy of the Graduate and Professional School Financial Aid Service Form or a financial aid form of equivalent informational value (not the summary page). Financial information is expected to be comprehensive (this should include parents’ resources).
  4. A letter from the financial aid officer of the medical school with detailed verification of financial need.
  5. A statement of academic standing from the medical school.
  6. A letter of recommendation from a district society member or a faculty member.

Worcester (MA) District Medical Society

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a legal resident of Central Massachusetts* at the time of applying to medical school
  • Must be currently enrolled as a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student, attending an accredited allopathic (MD) or osteopathic (DO) medical school (not on leave or in your gap year, in a degree program such as an MPH or PHD, or in a fellowship year at the time that award is dispersed)
  • Must be considered a full-time student, in good academic standing and maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
  • Must demonstrate involvement in community service
  • Must have a financial need
  • Must submit a complete application and include:
    • Two letters of recommendation (sent directly to WDMS from author)
    • Personal essay describing a career in medicine and why they feel deserving of the award
    • Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Medical School Transcript (sent directly to WDMS from student affairs office)

Casey Family Services Alumni Scholarship

If you’re a verifiable alumnus of Casey Family Services Foster Care in:

Connecticut
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Hampshire
Rhode Island

  • Between the ages of 16 and 49 (at the time of your application) and you’re
  • Thinking about, starting, or currently attending college or university in pursuit of a certificate, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree, or a professional degree including law or medicine (but not a Ph.D.), or
  • Thinking about, starting or currently attending a technical or vocational school in pursuit of a certificate or certification, then

You may be eligible for the Casey Family Services (CFS) Alumni Scholarship.

  • Up to $10,000 in total over the course of your education, to be utilized within 10 years of your application date
  • Funds may be used for tuition or other expenses directly related to educational pursuits (for example, required books, student activity fees, registration fees, dormitory room and board, or living expenses while enrolled as a student)
